What is nose surgery?

Nose surgery or Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that usually aims to change the appearance of the nose. In other cases the surgery is performed to help alleviate breathing problems.

There are various reasons people decide to undergo rhinoplasty, but most commonly it’s due to the desire to improve their facial aesthetic by reshaping the nose. Another popular reason is to correct some functional problems such as breathing difficulties, sinus issues, snoring (sleep apnea), nasal deformities, traumatic nasal injuries etc.

There are two techniques used for nose surgery, known as closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty involves modifications performed inside the nostrils. The incisions are hidden inside the patient’s nose. It can be done by augmenting the nasal structure with cartilage/tissue from other parts or with silicone implants. In closed rhinoplasty all surgery is done through the nostrils so there are no external scars. This is commonly known as a “nose job”. This is usually good for minor tip changes.

Open rhinoplasty is a more complicated technique. This surgery is a procedure in which the incision used to access the structures of the nose results in broad exposure of the underlying bone and cartilage structure. This technique improves accuracy for reshaping the framework of the nose to achieve desired contouring or septum repair.
How long does nose surgery take?
Closed rhinoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthetic and takes 1 hour, while Open rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between 1 to 3 hours depending on the complications of the work.

How long does nose surgery recovery take?
Patients can go home on the same day as their surgery. Expect some pain, swelling and bruising after the procedure. The swelling usually disappears within two weeks for closed rhinoplasty and 3 - 4 weeks for open rhinoplasty. Patients should be able to return to work and daily activities after 1 - 2 weeks.
